Lighthouse: Easier Data Access for Management Systems

by Terry Rajendran - March 24, 2011 at 11:14 am

Today it is more difficult than ever for same-day surgery centers to remain profitable. The path to payment has more obstacles, and the management software used by surgery centers (often with very good clinical components) has limited ability to keep up with the changing revenue cycle requirements. Administrators and Business Office Managers often create workarounds, develop spreadsheets, and spend hours researching answers while collectors are bogged down trying to uncover payment problems. It is time consuming to gather and analyze data, making it difficult to respond to questions and pinpoint problems. Unfortunately, time is often a luxury that ASC business offices don’t have and pressure mounts when answers are hidden in data just beyond our reach.

Our world is becoming more data-focused, and as healthcare management continues down this path we need to find new ways to adapt. An enormous amount of data won’t be enough; we need answers and we need them quickly.

LaClaro understands the ins and outs of the revenue cycle. Terry Rajendran (one of our co-founders) is the Revenue Cycle Director at the Surgical Center at Premier in Colorado Springs and knows exactly the kind of pressure that ASC business offices are under today. She needed a new kind of tool that could help automate her collector’s workflow. She needed new reporting that could bring oversight and transparency to the entire revenue cycle, helping to find trouble spots that could be addressed in new ways. She needed answers that just couldn’t be found in management systems.

Craig Poley (our other co-founder) took these requirements and began designing a new suite of tools. Craig’s background is in technology and he has been described as the kind of person who solves unsolvable problems. He listened to the challenges that the people in the ASC business office had to face day in and day out and came up with a unique and revolutionary solution. A few years ago, Google changed the way we use the Internet. Google essentially put a kiosk on the Internet, allowing us to mine far-reaching data and find answers quickly. Craig applied this same model to the data in management systems when he developed Lighthouse.

Add on code 32507 Thoracotomy; with diagnostic wedge resection followed by anatomic lung resection, is intended to be reported along with a more extensive primary procedure to show that diagnostic wedge resection was performed on the lung first. The physician may use an intraoperative pathology consultation in order to determine that a more extensive resection procedure, such as pneumonectomy, is required at the same site.
